Riot police shot tear gas and water cannons at protesters in Hong Kong on Saturday, who defied a police ban against rallying on the 5th anniversary of China’s decision to limit democratic reforms, and in honour of the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement triggered by it.

Riot policemen were filmed holding placards, reading “Disperse or we fire” and “Warning, tear smoke”, shortly before the clashes erupted. Protesters were filmed using umbrellas to shelter from the tear gas.

Protests have been taking place in Hong Kong since the end of March. Demonstrators are calling for the withdrawal of a suspended bill that would allow the extradition of the city’s residents to mainland China for trials, as well as for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s resignation.
