1.Hong Kong protest: ‘Religious gathering’ turns violent | DW News

In Hong Kong, thousands of protesters have gathered for the 13th straight weekend, despite strong warnings from police that marchers are risking arrest. Today’s demonstration began in a stadium and was called a ‘religious gathering’ in an attempt to circumvent a ban on protests. A day of peaceful demonstrations escalated as night fell, with barricades set on fire in the streets. Police for the first time fired water cannons loaded with blue dye, which stained protesters outside of government headquarters. Today also marks the fifth anniversary of a decision by China’s ruling Communist Party against full democratic elections in Hong Kong. Pro-democracy activist and Demosisto co-founder Joshua Wong, who was released from jail after having been arrested in connections with the protests, commented on the movement.
