1.’Boris Johnson, shame on you’: thousands protest against prorogation

Tens of thousands of demonstrators are taking to the streets across Britain and outside the gates of Downing Street in protest against Boris Johnson’s move to suspend parliament.

Crowds brandished banners pledging to ‘defend democracy’, chanted ‘stop the coup’ and waved EU flags in dozens of locations around the country, including London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Leeds.

The prime minister has defended his decision to prorogue parliament, suggesting it has helped the UK’s negotiating stance by showing the EU it is serious about leaving the bloc with or without a deal on 31 October.
